7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872, Italianate, two-story
square plan brick side gable, modified, need to investigate further.
Physical Description: several things are striking about this design, first the wall is American bond brick
which would not be used on a façade, and second, the entrance and lower windows have been
replaced. What has happened is that a square plan with a southward original orientation has been re-
fronted to the west, towards West Locust. An early building date is hinted if this building first fronted
th
towards 17 Street. The eaves extend beyond the end walls with the chimney being centered on the
roof ridge. The cast (?) lintels are singular in Dubuque and consist of a denticulated rounded top, and
an incised straight base. There are rounded (double rowlock brick arches) end attic lights and
bracketed eaves with returns. The stone foundation is raised and basement windows have double
rowlock brick arches that are set above the stone foundation cap.
Alterations: re-fronted to west, new entry and lower front windows, windows replaced. Permits note re-
roofing in 1995, exterior repairs 1953, roof repair 1972, conversion of single family to multi-family
dwelling 1977 ($13,000), partial re-siding 1978, replace floor joists, windows 1981 ($350).
Landscaping/Setting: level site, orients west at present.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: appears on 1872 birds eye view. Ellen E. Addinsell owned the parcel when it was first
sewered.
1899 & 1894 Mary Westphal.
