7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1869, vernacular two-story
brick side gable duplex plan, modified to Shingle style, then re-modified recently with a mansard-like
parapet front.
Physical Description: this and the property to the northwest (364-66) were originally nearly identical
duplex plans certainly built by the same designer/builder. The original plan was that of a side-gable
duplex one with the eaves continued over the end walls, however in this case, brick voussoir arches
were used in this case (this might mean a re-fronting of the whole house?). The plan has symmetrical
fenestration but in this case small front half windows were placed above the entries and the two upper
level outside windows were enlarged for use as doors to exit onto a front porch roof. Most unusual is
the provision of four front doors, again likely reflecting a wholesale remodeling with very narrow
openings. There is a raised stone foundation. Note that the corbelled brick supports and base for an
identical front dormer as is still on 364-66 W. Locust, are visible on this façade, indicating that it went
through the same stylistic transformation. There was originally a centered front porch but that is gone,
replaced by a large open deck. Windows have been replaced and two upper level front ones are
paneled shut.
Alterations: re-fronting of façade. Permits note re-roofing in 1981, 1989, repair of roof fire damage
1978 ($4,200), porch demolition 1979, repairs 1981 ($37,500), replacement of open porch 35x10 1995.
Landscaping/Setting: ground rises to the west, duplex fronts northeast.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: J. G. Peterson built “two double brick tenements each 36x29 with wings of 16x22, two
th
stories, $6,000” at the corner of Locust and 17 streets in 1869. This was the first of three houses that
he would build on this block between 1869 and 1891. This is a good candidate to one of these
duplexes (Herald, December 16, 1869). This building appears on the 1872 birds eye overview. This
could be 345 W. Locust as well. Peterson lived at 60 West Locust as of 1893, which is 378-80 today.
He owned the parcel when it was first sewered.
1899 J. G. Peterson at 60 West Locust
