Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1880s (Grannis), post-1891, 1906 (Assessor) pre-1909, Neo-Classical style (pedimented gable, rounded dormer fronts, diamond lights in dormer sash, Doric columns, lunette windows with keystone elements, friezes on dormer gable fronts. Physical Description: two-story rectangular brick plan (irregular plan with front porch slightly recessed into plan by six feet, core 48x40, rear wing 16’6x28, porch 10x24’6”) with three-sided south bay (3x13), double decker front porch, south pedimented side porch, raised stone foundation and water table, rusticated stone belt courses at sill and lintel levels, both floors, high pitched hip roof, four assorted dormers of varied form and width, fine corbelled chimney on south side wall, stone steps and porch piers. Grannis notes differing dormer treatments. Alterations: very well preserved. Permits note re-roofing in 1975, 1976 (half), 1996, 1999, dormer and soffit repairs 1998. Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner location, fronts east. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Stephen Hempstead was the owner/ builder, but Dr. James M. Guthrie, Dean of the Iowa School of Medicine, finished it. (Marjory Grannis) Building History: new porch by Dr. James R. Guthrie, $600, 1915 (Telegraph-Herald, December 26, 1915). Dr. Guthrie listed here 1918-21. Second owners wre Dr. and Mrs. Shortel, the latter was Dr. Guthrie’s daughter. Miss. Guthrie held here wedding reception here. Mrs. M. C. McMaster owned the parcel when it was sewered. J. Thomas Zaber purchased the building in 1982 and began a five-phase restoration of the interior. The present use blends residences with office spaces. A “New York Loft” unit occupies the third floor (owner information provided). 9.
