7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1931, Eclectic Medieval, two-
story parapet front with armory-like east and north gateway pediments. Roughly coursed fieldstone
veneer.
Designer/Builder: Raymond F. Moore, architect (Cedar Rapids)
Physical Description: square plan with spandrel-linked upper and lower level window sets with smooth
stone surrounds. Entry pavilions overlay stairway with massive side railings with buttressed engaged
towers and a connecting pediment with triangular centered cap. On the east entry an open balcony
overlays the broad entryway and serves the second floor, and the pediment half covers the balcony and
is supported by massive brackets. The north entry has a ground level recessed entrance but the
balcony is shallower as is the projection of the pediment. The corners of the core building have stone
buttresses with finished stone shoulders on each side, and buttresses are also placed between window
sets on the north wall. Lannon Wisconsin limestone.
Alterations: possible recovering of the window spandrels with vertical board. Permits note re-roofing in
1898 (assembly building), addition to door 1980.
Landscaping/Setting: prominent level corner location, building fronts north and east. Stone base and
flag pole on northeast corner.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Masonic Lodge, a testimony to the belated arrival of the Great Depression in
Dubuque-major building projects underway as of 1930-31 were completed.
Original Owner/Builder:
Building History: ground breaking November 10, 1930, cornerstone laid March 28, 1931, total cost
$325,000, dedicated January 1932 (Telegraph-Herald, January 28, 31, 1932). No sewer data found.
Original site of James Beach house.
