Special Significance; Alfred Tredway House
Original Owner/Builder: The Times credits Alfred Tredway with building a $17,000 residence in 1872,
“near Andrew’s house [site of present 1135 Locust]…tasty and costly residence soon to be
completed…It is the mate of Mr. Andrews in beauty and shape and strength of construction, 44x35,
three stories including Mansard.” Alfred Tredway built a brick house somewhere on Locust for $24,000
in 1880 and apparently replaced Beach’s house (although Beach might have been to the north on the
th
corner of 12 & Locust. (Beach house was where Masonic Temple is now.) Tredway built a $5,000
double brick house on Locust in 1886 although both of these could have been speculative ventures.
Directories continue to list him at this address (Times, January 9, 1873; Herald, December 17, 1871;
January 3, 1879; January 1, 1881; May 9, 1886.
Building History: Tredway owned the parcel when it was sewered. Apartments as of 1933.
1899 Beach is at 1183 Locust
