7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1854-55, (1856+/- Assessor)
1860, Italianate style with excellent belvedere and finial and broad bracketed eaves, rare (are rarer still,
preserved) ground level front elongated windows.
Designer/Builder: Robert Rogers, possible architect of rear original core, Rufus Rittenhouse builder of
front addition (Sommer, pp. 65-66).
Physical Description: square core two-story brick plan (30x30 core, 30x20 offset rear wing) on raised
stone foundation (basement windows have lintels that form part of the foundation cap), and subordinate
gable roof rear two-story brick wing. Right side entrance (side hall plan), wrap around (west, south
fronts, 34x34, 5’ deep) shallow hip roof porch with what is possibly the original thin square posts and
scrollwork. Plain stone lintels and sills. Excellent arcaded square cut belvedere on pyramid roof.
Alterations: Sommer says house started out as a single story brick and gained a second floor, hip roof
and belvedere c.1860, present configuration in place as of 1891, very well preserved. The original
house contained seven rooms, with an addition, it had 14 rooms as of 1933. Permits note re-roofing in
1969, 1985-86, 1997, repair roof 1966, remodel 1940 ($1,500), demolish outside stairs and replace with
deck 1983.
Landscaping/Setting: corner parcel ground level drops to the east, house fronts west, very early cast
iron decorative fence.

Special Significance; Frederick Weigle House.

Original Owner/Builder: Frederick Weigle also built an addition to his residence at 12 & Locust (and is
listed at this address as of 1880) at a cost of $1,500 (Times, December 11, 1878, says $400 addition,
Herald, January 3 1879).
Building History: Frederick Weigel was born in Germany in 1819 and came to America at the age of 11
years in August 1830, coming to Dubuque in 1833. He married Miss Susannah Hatton on May 9, 1850
in Dubuque. Daughter Fannie Weigel (Mrs. Ethan Allen Tonner, was aged 77 years and the fifth
generation of her family to occupy the house, the house where she was born in 1856 (Telegraph-
Herald-Times-Journal, August 6, 1933). Weigle first flour milling and then in meat packing. He built
thth
three substantial speculative business blocks, on Main between 6 and 11 streets.
Weigle owned the parcel when it was sewered.
Elijah Bissell first owned the lot in 1840, selling it to Timothy Davis in 1841, H. M. Sanford, 1852, and
Weigle in 1854.
