7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: c.1867, Gothic Revival style
1.5 story side gable frame residence with square cut tower, through cornice front cornice, end bay, and
decorative gable end trusses.
Physical Description: very irregular footprint, rectangular core 23x31 with right side wing 14x16, rear
wing 17x16, L-porch 19x10), twin ornate brick chimneys on the roof ridge, centered rear hip roof wing
and subordinated rear gable roof wing, rounded wrap-around porch on southwest corner, centered front
tower with steep pyramid roof, stone foundation.
Alterations: asbestos siding. Permits note re-roofing in 1934, 1974, 1991 (part), minor alterations 1941,
side and rear addition 1956 ($1,250), down spouts 1980, re-sided 1951, garage re-roofed 1989, front
porch repaired and re-roofed 1987, porch decking, columns repaired and some wood siding replaced
2000. Rear addition included kitchen and maid’s quarter.
Landscaping/Setting: corner lot drops away to the east, house fronts west.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: 1889 birds eye view shows this house on this corner. Front part of house is present
on the 1872 bird’s eye view. Jonathan Pardee Scott (?-1901) owned the parcel when it was sewered.
J. P. Scott was a lumberman, and he remodeled the house at the cost of $3,000 (Herald, December 12,
1884). The Scotts owned the house 1867-1916. Mathias Pfeiler was the second owner 1918-36.
1222-40 and 1268 all sold during Civil War (1862) to John Harvey and Eliz. Bradley (-c.1930), they built
the duplex after the war, this corner property was sold, 1268 was then built. Scott’s built this house.
Site of Third Pres. church, went bankrupt. Dau. Anna Page Scott, one of four children was a noted
painter. She was raised in the house. Owner has one of her paintings. She was educated at the Art
Inst. Chicago, France, England, worked at the Rochester Inst. of Technology.
1899 J. P. Scott at this address.
