8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Wm. Bradley
Building History: James W. Conant, City Express & Mail Agent, built a brick dwelling for $4,000 in 1877
and 1222 Locust was his address three years later (Herald, December 14, 1877).
Dr. E. A. Guilbert made improvements and an addition for $1,000 in 1870 and resided here as of 1890
(1222) (Times, December 18, 1870).
George M. Staples and John Maclay owned the parcel when it was sewered. Staples bought the south
side in the 1870s but did not live there. He housed medical staff for his practice in the same building.
He bought the north half in the 1880s and added the matching wings c.1890-91. Maclay, a dealer in
stoves and tinners’ ware, lived here 1878-86. John Maclay lived at 1240 when the property was
announced for sale in July 1895 (Herald, July 26, 1895). The Amenda family owned the entire building
from 1946 until 1986 (11 units as of 1971). Ownership was consolidated under Dr. Staples, and this
was restored under the Amendas.
