7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1872, Italianate/” Grecian”
style, 2.5 story gable front brick residence. [Assessor 1971 says 1868+]
Designer/Builder: Fred Heer Sr. (Telegraph-Herald, April 23, 1933).
Physical Description: the “Grecian” is apparently embodied in the very unusual carved stone lintels, the
porch scrollwork and the motifs on the brackets and cornice. There is a raised stone foundation, the
plan is rectangular (29x62) with a centered south gable roof wing and bay (6x18). The front gable is
steeply pitched and features returned eaves, a paired attic light, there are two elaborate original
corbelled brick chimneys on the back of the plan. Rear windows have simple stone lintels and sills in
lieu of the expected brick arches. Apparently original L-shaped porch with hexagonal posts and
unusual scrollwork 14x9 L with 7x17 wing). Left hand entry and side hall plan.
Alterations: very well preserved. Permits note re-roofing in 1945, new porch footings, replace rotten
boards 2000.
Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, fronts west.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: William L. Bradley completed a $10,000 “elegant residence in the Grecian
thth
style, 40x60, three stories high, on Locust between 12 and 13 streets in 1872. He resided at this
address as of 1875-80. He improved his house ($1,000) in 1878 and completed an addition ($2,500) in
1883 (Herald, November 24, 1872;December 20, 1883; Times, December 11, 1878). Bradley and
Harvey built a brick duplex, “very handsome,” on Locust in 1863, possibly an earlier building on this
parcel. Bradley lived there 1868-1869. Die Iowa decried shabby house building, citing a fire that
thth
worked through a chimney gap in Bradley’s new house on Locust between 12 an 13 streets. The fire
was extinguished (Die Iowa, March 6, 1879).
Building History: J. H. Shields owned the parcel when it was sewered.
1971 Assessors card noted tri-plex, two blocked up chimneys.
