7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: post-1889, pre-1891,
Italianate style two-story side gable brick duplex.
Physical Description: rectangular plan (34x40 front core, 34x26 centered rear wing), raised stone
foundation, basement windows have separate stone lintels and are aligned with upper windows, water
table, centered and paired entries, heavy wrap-around stone lintels with corbelled spring stones and
clear key stone forms. Stepped end walls, end wall chimneys. Gable roof dormer set into roof at north
end. Twin two-story rear brick wings centered on plan.
Alterations: original hip roof porch covered south two-thirds of plan, porch removed, concrete stoop and
metal railings, concrete steps. Permits (1272) note re-roofing in 1961, 1970, 1995, porch canopy 1966,
rear stairs built 1984, restoration (flashing, soffit, repair front eaves) 1992, permits for 1274, re-roofings
1932, 1954, roof repair 1966, porch canopy 1969, re-side rear porch 1967.
Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, fronts west.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: it is possible that builders [William L.] Bradley & Harvey built this “very
handsome” brick duplex at this address in 1863 (Herald, May 13, 1863).
Building History: Edward Langworthy owned the north half of this property as of June 1872, and George
and Emily Wood owned the south half as of 1878. John and Viola Rider bought the north half (no date)
(1998 Old House Enthusiasts House Tour).
J. H. Lull, George D. Wood owned the parcel when it was sewered.
