Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1872? A most unusual brick Italianate duplex plan wherein two separate houses are joined using an inset square porch and single entrance to both dwellings. The duplex is a cross between an L-plan house and a school house. The style is embodied in the cornice with paired brackets, the profusely bracketed tower and the uncommon (and rarely preserved) ground-length first story front windows, and the second story oriole. Physical Description: The two-story side gable brick plan consists of two parallel plans, a rectangular one (south, 36x18) and an L-plan north (38x20 with west 8x8 and south 4x18 wings), the latter runs further east than does the latter due to its setback behind the tower. The property is no longer a duplex, but it is the only known Dubuque example where a double entry serves two units. Windows are paired beneath the bay on the south half gable roof pavilion. They are linked with a broad rounded stone lintel with decorative frieze and small spring stones. The same lintel form, with an upper sill, is used on the façade and side wall openings. There is a raised stone foundation with an indent for a water table. Rear porches 19x7 and 16x10. Alterations: the original porch, present by 1891, was of equal width and wrapped across the entire front. By 1909 there was a square porch that covered the front north of the tower’s south corner. There is no porch today, simply a concrete stoop and steps and metal railings. Craftsman style windows (four intersecting lines near the outer edges of the upper sash) date to c.1910. Permits note re-roofing in 1953, 1979, 1988, alterations 1941, add an apartment 1941 ($75.), alterations 1979, repair wood soffit 1988, remove porch, replace with 4x7 enclosed porch 1988, remodel 1944. Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, the house fronts west. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: William L. Bradley built a “large brick dwelling, two and a half stories…with marble window caps and sills, 40x63, $4,500” using builder Tom Connolly. This house was on Locust th near 13, and might be this one, the tower counting as another story? John H. Lull lived here and remodeled the house for $2,000 in 1884. He was an insurance man and broker, and was treasurer of the Key City Gas Company (Herald, November 24, 1872, December 12, 1884). Building History: John H. Lull remodeled this property in 1884 at a cost of $2,000 (directories place him at this address, or Mrs. M. E. Lull or Mary Lull, 1890-1921) (Herald, December 12, 1884). Lull worked an insurance and as a broker and was treasurer for the Key City Gas Company. Lull owned the parcel when it was sewered. Margaret Nagle owned 1955-69. 9.
