Richards House Dubuque Name of Property County 1492 Locust Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1883, Queen Anne/Stick style, embodied in the asymmetrical massing of core and roof, shingled upper level, varied materials, and rich ornamentation of gable ends and bay fronts. This design is of particular interest given its apparent early building date-way early for Stick style in Dubuque. This design was awarded a #2 ranking in the early surveys, probably because it lacks the major decorative elements such as towers, etc. Its ranking should be advanced given its early date and its excellent state of preservation. It is a key case study for examining its design source (pattern book or architect designed?). There are seven fireplaces and noted children’s artist Kate Gateway designed the nursery rhyme fireplace tiles on a second floor fireplace. Designer/Builder: Franklin D. Hyde, architect (Shank, p. 86; elevation and plans, Dubuque, The Key City of Iowa, 1889). Physical Description: two-story frame broad rectangular core with hip steeply pitched side gable roof, set on very high raised stone foundation. Two-story rear gabled wing set alongside the north wall plane, there is a rounded bay in the southeast inset with a wrap-around porch. The core projects a 2.5- story gabled wing on the north side of the west façade, a turned two-story bay on the southwest front corner, a pedimented open attic dormer with internal base with balcony with a second floor open balcony on the right side of the west façade. There is a three-story square-cut through cornice oriole on the center of the north side wall with a gable roof cap, and there is a first floor oriole to the west of it. It is heavily bracketed at the water table level and is set above a double basement window. There is a balcony top and this is repeated beneath a gable roof attic level dormer. The roof has large gablet ends and there is a massive chimney with corbelled cap on the south roof plane. The second story and all projecting elements are shingled with mixed shingle patterns. The bay spandrels feature faux half timber motifs. Decorative bargeboard with cut bases combine with open decorative king post trusses and wooden grilles on each gable front. Alterations: a comparison with the 1897 photo in Souvenir Gems indicates that virtually no changes have taken place on this most remarkable plan since then. The saddest lost is that of the adjacent high th school, immediately north across 16 Street. Permits note re-roofing in 1979, 1994, roof repairs 1952, replace treads, plate, rails on porch 1989, masonry chimney repair 1994. Landscaping/Setting: a prominent corner parcel that drops away rapidly to the east, the house fronts closely on the sidewalk, there is a metal fence, the house fronts west. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Benjamin B. Richards House. Richards came to the city in 1854, worked as a realtor, he was the president and founder of Dubuque National Bank, served two years as a state representative and eight years as a state senator. Also home of Theodore “Ted” Ellsworth, whose mother was Theodora Richards. Richards House Dubuque Name of Property County 1492 Locust Dubuque Address City th Original Owner/Builder: B.B. Richards built a $15,000 frame house at the southeast corner of 15 and Locust in 1883 (Herald, December 20, 1883). The same source reported that the new house was “progressing rapidly” as of June 19, 1883. Richards owned the parcel when it was sewered. Building History: The Richards family held the house until 1989 (1990 Old House Enthusiasts House Tour; Jackson Park Walking Tour). It is now a bed and breakfast 9.
