Hatch Duplex Dubuque Name of Property County 1552-1554 Locust Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1890, Gothic Revival style (pointed dormer windows, crossed truss infill in dormer), Second Empire (single plane Mansard attic roof), Queen Anne (cross dormer, gable roof hoods on attic level, bracketed cornice, mixed materials th and colors, 2/2 lights). See similar designs on W. 14 Street. Physical Description: two-story brick plan with full attic living level, single plane mansard front, raised end walls, stone foundation, symmetrical fenestration with paired window sets on outside of each floor level front, rounded double rowlock brick window arches that are traced above and below using a lighter colored projecting brick, the latter forms a double belt course at the lintel levels and a doubled brick belt course of the same color joins with the stone sills to create the same effect at the sill level on each floor. Both lines continue at least along the south side wall which is unusual. The window sets have elongated lintels and unified long sills. There is a large steeply pitched shingled cross gable with a cross-truss ornamentation. The gable front has twin Gothic pointed lights. Flanking “dormers” consist of simple open gable roof hoods set above window surrounds, the hoods feature decorative trusses. There is a full-width hip roof front porch (c.1910). A two-story rear brick addition or wing is of equal width. A north end wall chimney with corbelled cap survives. Alterations: the original porch was a small centered one. Three chimneys have been capped off. Permits note re-roofing in 1982, 1993 (both 1552), 1933, 1995 (both 1554), new porch roof 8x16 (1552), drywall, drop ceiling (1554) 1995. Landscaping/Setting: The duplex is very well preserved. The lot drops to the east, the duplex fronts west. There is an iron fence. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Rosa V. Hatch duplex. Grannis says built for Horace Poole Original Owner/Builder: built for Ms. Hatch $5,500 in 1890 (Herald, January 18, 1891). Directories confirm at this address as of 1899 (1554). Building History: George P. Hatch was the agent for the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Company as of 1893. Dated to 1873 by the Jackson Park Walking Tour which is incorrect, same source noted Charles Becker of Becker-Hazelton (importers of fine china and crockery) lived here at one time. States Horace Poole commissioned the building “but did not always live there.” He was a grocer and operated a wholesale tobacco and tea firm, and served as U.S. Marshall for the Northeast District. His wife was the daughter of Solon Langworthy. Directories place C. H. Becker (1552) and G. P. Hatch (1554) here as of 1899. 9.
