Parker House Dubuque Name of Property County 1576 Locust Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1885, Queen Anne style (cut corner, contrast in materials/colors, gable infill, dormer, rounded roof form, asymmetry of massing). This design is notable for its excellent brickwork and it would be worthwhile to pursue the builder/designer. Designer/Builder: F. D. Hyde, architect (elevation and plans, Dubuque, The Key City of Iowa, 1889). Physical Description: Two-story rectangular brick plan with raised stone foundation and broad stone water table, gabled centered south side wing with cutaway corners. The front of the plan also features a cutaway corner on its southwest front corner. The entry is on the left and the original porch covered only the straight front. Projecting brick belt courses trace the sill and spring-stone levels on each floor. Double rowlock brick rounded window arches are combined with stone sills (the latter are unusual because they have slight side caps. The brickwork is excellent, most notably in the angled corners where the corner is both turned and recessed, forming a vertical shadow line. The front through cornice gable roof dormer has a corbelled brick pavilion base on the upper part of the second floor wall. The roof is rounded off by the cutaway corner eaves line roof plane and features a centered hip roof dormer (shingled side walls) that is placed in front of a gablet (hip roof overall with gabled extensions). The porch is of some note given its intermixing of shallow stuccoed Tudor arches, ornamental modillions beneath the eaves line, brick piers and base with open wooden balustrade, brick finials and stone globe finials. Alterations: porch, c.1910 as noted, window replacement. Permits note re-roofing in 1933, 1966, three porches repaired 1982. The original design had a rounded front dormer. It has been replaced by a taller gable roof one. Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, west orientation. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Alonzo J. Parker House Original Owner/Builder: Parker built this “two and a half story” brick house for $6,000 in 1885 (Herald, January 20, 1885) (the Herald reported that Capt. Parker completed a brick dwelling for $2,000, ibid., December 12, 1884). Building History: Parker worked for the H. B. Glover Company as of 1893. Directories place Parker here as of 1899. Alonzo J. Parker owned the parcel when it was sewered. 1899 – A. J. Parker listed at this address H E E B S T R E E T M A D I S O N S T R E E T T E RE T S H T 17 IO W .
