Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872, Italianate style (paired brackets beneath all eaves lines, paired attic light with coupled stone lintel, narrow window openings, corbelled brick side chimney) side hall plan. Physical Description: two-story gable front brick side hall plan (66x39) residence with raised stone foundation, water table, and a two-story rear wing offset to the north with an elongated single-story side porch. Lintels have prominent curved sills and flattened ends and might be cast. The porch is c.1910 with Neo-Classical form (tripled tapered rounded columns, denticulated cornice, brick piers). Single- story rear wing (26x39) “of stone” might have triggered permastone exterior work. Alterations: porch as noted, rear flat roof garage addition. Permits note re-roofing in 1931, 1994, floor repairs and alterations 1937, remodel and repair 1937, porch alterations 1994, replace wood soffits 1995. Landscaping/Setting: corner parcel rises to the west, there is a raised stone retaining wall and cap and front terrace. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: th Original Owner/Builder: Alderman Arthur McCann built a $2,000 house on the corner of Main and 13 in 1878, starting the basement late that year (Herald, January 3, 1879; January 1, 1880; Times December 11, 1878). This could be any of four corners including 1301 Main. William Stephenson built a “solid comfortable brick mansion,” two stories, 40x50, “free from superfluous adornment, 12 rooms, each 15x15, and a drawing room, 16x28, $12,000, French Peale windows, white cornice (Herald, October 31, 1875). D. N. Cooley erected two “fine two story brick dwellings,” 24x30 with an L-wing, $6,000 each in 1868. It is probable that 1301 and 1313 (non-extant), apparently duplicate plans, were these two houses (Herald, January 1, 1869). Building History: The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main states “South of Fourteenth street on the west side are several brick houses (still standing) the first occupied by Hon. W. J. Knight, the others by T. P. Rood, C. H. Eighmey and Dr. Asa Horr.” Arthur McCann owned the parcel when it was sewered. Didesch Funeral Home owns 1971-77+ (Mable L. then Alois, Owsley and Delores after 1974). th Look for Florence Flats, 13 & Main, designed by Thos. Carkeek, architect (Dubuque of Today, 1897). th According to 1899 directory Florence Flats was on the se corner of 13 & Main (now Mario’s restaurant) 1310 – McCann; 1311 – Asa Horr; 1323 – T.
