Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1884, post-1891-1909, 1941, Art Deco, light brick, stone window surrounds and unified vertical window sets with Art Deco fluted spandrels. Its architecture mirrors that found on the Telegraph-Herald building. Physical Description: a 2.5-story L-plan brick residence (50x40 with 16x17 recessed two-story brick addition, 20x17, set into southeast corner) evolved into the present apartment house by 1936. Rounded metal entry, concrete steps. Denticulated cornice. Stone side walls on steps, metal railings. Single-story brick rear wing (northeast corner) 16x20. One fireplace. Alterations: some block glass infilling of center window openings. Permits note re-roofing in 1989 (part), 1996, change single family to nine family complex 1942 ($3,000), veneering front of family dwelling 1942 ($1,000), erect two-car garage 1942, repair exterior stairs, repair interior fire damage 1991, demolish garage 1991, repairs, replace steps, landing and rails 1994. Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, fronts west. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Joseph G. Bailey (wife Francis) remodeled the house and made it “more modern” in 1899 (Telegraph, May 28, 1899). Bailey was then president of the Dyersville Bank and vice president of the Dubuque National Bank. Building History: no building permit found. Nine apartments 1971. The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main states “On the east side (at the corner of Fourteenth street) is the house occupied by R. E. Graves, president of the Commercial National Bank (now the home of Mrs. Paine). The house next south of this is the home of Dr. Samuel Guilbert and south of this, a space since occupied by the present three-story brick residence. Following this is the house occupied by J. G. Bailey (long since dead, whose family is now living in Los Angeles). The next house on the corner, was built and occupied by Arthur McCann (this building with additions is now the Dideach Funeral Home [this property].” Joseph G. Bailey owned the parcel when it was sewered. 1899 – J.G. Bailey at this address 9.
