Knight residence Dubuque Name of Property County 1397 Main Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872 (1876 Assessor), Italianate style (side hall plan, returned eaves, paired and tripled brackets under cornice, elongated lower front windows, rounded attic light). Designer/Builder: Fred Heer Sr. (Telegraph-Herald, April 23, 1933); Heer & Naescher, remodeling architects, 1877. Physical Description: original core rectangular two-story gable brick front plan (T-plan with 38x24 with crosswings, 20x36) with returned eaves, rounded front attic light, stone foundation, double rowlock brick window arches and stone sills. Entry is right sided and retains a singular frame surround and bracketed canopy. A two-story brick wing with paired attic end rounded lights and the same cornice lines projects beyond the core on both sides, forming a “T” footprint. A second two-story hip roof th narrow rectangular wing, steps further north and abuts the sidewalk on 14 Street (all are present by 1891 and two other sections, of equal height, then continue south along the alley (L-plan, north core 21x27, south wing 15x31 with attached 14x20 brick garage at end). Very elaborate cast lintels, with distinctive caps, pediments and brackets were used on this middle rear addition and likely reflect the 1877 work. Double three-sided bay on south wing. Single-story 22x20 frame addition in southeast front corner. Alterations: entryway reduced, transom sealed off, windows replaced, painted. Permits note erection of side porch and front stoop 1947, conversion to multi-family dwelling with ten additional units, “completely gutted” 1970-72 ($50,000). Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner lot on half block, rear abuts on Bluff Street, ground rises to the west, low stone retaining wall and cast iron fence on east, north sides (present in Souvenir Gem 1897 photo). 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; W. J. Knight residence, still there 1897. Original Owner/Builder: W. J Knight Building History: W. J. Knight improved his residence in 1877, spending $8,000. Account locates the th house at 14 and Main streets (Times, April 17, 1877). The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933***? Carl W. Ziepprecht lived here as of 1933. 1870s walking tour of Main states “South of Fourteenth street on the west side are several brick houses (still standing) the first occupied by Hon. W. J. Knight, the others by T. P. Rood, C. H. Eighmey and Dr. Asa Horr.” W. J. Knight owned the parcel when it was sewered. Eleven apartments as of 1971. 1899 – W. J.
