7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872 (1876 Assessor),
Italianate style (side hall plan, returned eaves, paired and tripled brackets under cornice, elongated
lower front windows, rounded attic light).
Designer/Builder: Fred Heer Sr. (Telegraph-Herald, April 23, 1933); Heer & Naescher, remodeling
architects, 1877.
Physical Description: original core rectangular two-story gable brick front plan (T-plan with 38x24 with
crosswings, 20x36) with returned eaves, rounded front attic light, stone foundation, double rowlock
brick window arches and stone sills. Entry is right sided and retains a singular frame surround and
bracketed canopy. A two-story brick wing with paired attic end rounded lights and the same cornice
lines projects beyond the core on both sides, forming a “T” footprint. A second two-story hip roof
th
narrow rectangular wing, steps further north and abuts the sidewalk on 14 Street (all are present by
1891 and two other sections, of equal height, then continue south along the alley (L-plan, north core
21x27, south wing 15x31 with attached 14x20 brick garage at end). Very elaborate cast lintels, with
distinctive caps, pediments and brackets were used on this middle rear addition and likely reflect the
1877 work. Double three-sided bay on south wing. Single-story 22x20 frame addition in southeast
front corner.
Alterations: entryway reduced, transom sealed off, windows replaced, painted. Permits note erection of
side porch and front stoop 1947, conversion to multi-family dwelling with ten additional units,
“completely gutted” 1970-72 ($50,000).

west, low stone retaining wall and cast iron fence on east, north sides (present in Souvenir Gem 1897
photo).
