7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1870, Italianate style (cubic
massing, bracketed broad cornice, symmetrical fenestration, flat-topped pyramid roof, elongated lower
front windows). Neo Classical style full-width front porch with Corinthian columns, concrete balustrade
and stair rails, newel posts, and elaborate classical frieze beneath the cornice.
Designer/Builder: Fridolin Heer, Sr., architect (Telegraph-Herald, April 23, 1933)
Physical Description: square two-story brick plan on stone foundation, north end wall chimney, centered
entrance (double with original doors), cast stone lintels with prominent sill and spring stones, stone sills.
Single gable roof dormer on rear core roof plane. Rear wing, two-stories with hip roof, offset north with
centered rear chimney. Simple rounded stone lintels on wing, elongated gable roof brick garage
attached which runs to the alley, original panel tri-fold doors, double rowlock brick window arches.
Alterations: porch (present as of 1909) as noted, replaces short centered original and garage (also
present 1909). Permits note re-roofing in 1978, front porch repairs 1988.
Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, slight terrace and retaining wall, fronts east. Garage at back of
property, attached.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; David B. Henderson residence, he was a prominent lawyer, with Henderson, Hurd
& Daniels and served as a Collector of Internal Revenue and Assistant U.S. Attorney for Northeast
Iowa. He served in the U.S. House and was Speaker of the House. Henderson had lost a leg during
his Civil War service (Jackson Park Walking Tour).
Original Owner/Builder: J. H. Thedinga built two fine brick two-story dwellings, each 50x50, on Main
th
and the corner of 14 Street, each with an L-wing, total cost $11,000 (Times, December 18, 1870).
1433 and 1455 Main are nearly identical and surely must represent those two buildings. The footprints
including rear wings and side porches are identical on the 1884 Sanborn Map.
Also likely attributable to first owner, David B. Henderson, who occupied the southernmost of three new
mansions, 38.5x22.5, with a 23x22 ell, two stories, $10,000 (Times, November 9, 1873).
Henderson however is also credited with building a “double brick dwelling” for $4,000 in 1879, and he is
listed at this address the next year.
The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main locates the residence of D. B.
Henderson, “built in 1873” as being immediately south of that of George Crane. B. A. Pieckenbrook
lived here in 1933.
Building History: Henderson owned the parcel when it was sewered.
