Henderson residence, he was a prominent lawyer, with Henderson, Hurd & Daniels and served as a Collector of Internal Revenue and Assistant U.S. Attorney for Northeast Iowa. He served in the U.S. House and was Speaker of the House. Henderson had lost a leg during his Civil War service (Jackson Park Walking Tour). Original Owner/Builder: J. H. Thedinga built two fine brick two-story dwellings, each 50x50, on Main th and the corner of 14 Street, each with an L-wing, total cost $11,000 (Times, December 18, 1870). 1433 and 1455 Main are nearly identical and surely must represent those two buildings. The footprints including rear wings and side porches are identical on the 1884 Sanborn Map. Also likely attributable to first owner, David B. Henderson, who occupied the southernmost of three new mansions, 38.5x22.5, with a 23x22 ell, two stories, $10,000 (Times, November 9, 1873). Henderson however is also credited with building a “double brick dwelling” for $4,000 in 1879, and he is listed at this address the next year. The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main locates the residence of D. B. Henderson, “built in 1873” as being immediately south of that of George Crane. B. A. Pieckenbrook lived here in 1933. Building History: Henderson owned the parcel when it was sewered. H E E B S T R E E T M A D I S O N S T R E E T T E RE T S H T 17 IO W .
