7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: rear original core c.1856, front
addition 1860s, Italianate style two-story square plan with hip roof (style embodied in bracketed,
denticulated cornice, paired narrow windows, end wall chimneys, and front ground level three-sided
bays).
Physical Description: raised plain cut stone foundation with water table, paired windows with joined
rounded stone wrap-around lintels and key and spring stones, stone sills, twin single-story bays flank a
rounded entry porch and centered double door entry with large transom (original entry doors), balconies
with balustrades atop each bay. The porch with its copied cornice details was not present originally
and appears first on the 1909 Sanborn Map. It has rusticated concrete block pillar supports and
concrete open balustrade. The rear wings are identical with those on 1433 Main south. Basement
windows beneath the bays are vertically aligned with the bay windows and have flat stone lintels, part
of the water table.
Alterations: added porch. Permits note re-roofing in 1996, conversion from single-family to multi-family
dwelling 1961 ($8,500), erect garage with rear entrance 1964, addition of one unit to brick veneered
dwelling 1964 ($2,500), garage re-roofed, front porch re-roofed 1993.
Landscaping/Setting: low terrace, level property, fronts east, attached brick garage.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; George Crane residence
Original Owner/Builder: J. H. Thedinga built two fine brick two-story dwellings, each 50x50, on Main
th
and the corner of 14 Street, each with an L-wing, total cost $11,000 (Times, December 18, 1870).
1433 and 1455 Main are nearly identical and surely must represent those two buildings. The footprints
including rear wings and side porches are identical on the 1884 Sanborn Map.
Also likely attributable to first owner, George Crane, who occupied the middle of three new mansions,
38.5x22.5, with a 23x22 ell, two stories, same form as Henderson’s to the south but “a trifle more
stylish, with frontal bay windows and a billard hall finished in the basement,” $11,000 (Times,
November 9, 1873).
The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main locates the residence of George
Crane immediately south of that of A. J. Van Duzee.
Building History: Frank N. Schroeder bought the house in the early 1900s and held until 1961.
Schroeder was a noted wholesale grocer and a Director of the Dubuque Altar Company. He served
three terms as county treasurer and was a board of education member (Jackson Park Walking Tour).
Crane owned the parcel when it was sewered.
