7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1878, Second Empire style
(Mansard roof with double cornice, exuberant dormers, and two of the best corbelled chimney caps in
the city, twin three-sided bays that flank the centered double door entrance, singular lintels and sills).
Designer/Builder: Fridolin Heer, Sr. as architect (Shanks, p. 80, dates to 1879; Telegraph-Herald, April
23, 1933).
Physical Description: two-story Indiana limestone veneered L-plan (cut panels with false mortar joints)
with rear wing offset south, the stone lintels are seemingly applied to the surface and are layered or
overlaid in their arrangement, stepping out from the spring stone to the cap and pediment. The upper
windows have flattened rounded shapes and it is uncertain as to whether the transom like gaps
between window and lintel are original. The lower level windows are in line with the window openings.
The entire façade is incised with carved designs with a repeating circular motif. There is a raised stone
foundation and water table. The stone is presumably smooth stone. There is a stone bracketed
canopy and stone railings on the stairs. There never was any porch. The attic dormers can best be
described as being similar to mirror frames. They are wonderfully fashioned with pendants and corner
finials. The central gable roof dormer appears to have first contained a Palladian-like window set. A
rear addition is of frame construction and includes a two-story attached garage.
Alterations: the horrific metal canopy has been removed after several decades of use and
preservationists’ outcries, upper front middle windows have been infilled as has the attic central dormer.
Permits note re-roofing in 1936, 1947, 1960, 1962 (mansard roof on business building), 1978, 1979
(change pitch of flat roof), 1989 (flat roof), 1990 (funeral home), 1996 (flat roof, rear sections of
Mansard roofs and replace gutters), 1997 (south main roof), 1998 (north and east sides), re-sided
1981, alterations to frame assembly building 1986 ($30,000), garage converted to preparation room
2000 ($8,000).
Landscaping/Setting: level corner lot, fronts east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Alexander Young residence, Young reached Galena at the age of 20 years where
he served as sheriff prior to coming to Dubuque in 1845. His fortune was gained in steamboats and
lumber.
Original Owner/Builder: Young built his “elegant marble residence” for $30,000, the Times termed it a
“fine brick residence” and valued it at $25,000 (Herald, January 3, 1879; Times, December 11, 1878).
Ground was broken August 7, 1877 (Herald). As of mid-October the new house was approaching
completion and “will be the handsomest in the city” (Herald, October 18, 1877). The Herald, May 8,
1878, proclaimed the house, then under construction, as “one of the finest in the state.”
Building History: later owners were merchant John Bell, and Frank Bell (as of 1933) (Jackson Park
Walking Tour).

The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main noted “Crossing Fifteenth street on
the west side we find at the corner, a vacant lot, with a small frame house on the alley, the home of one
of Dubuque’s few policemen (Upon this lot Alexander Young later built the white stone residence now
owned by Mrs. Frank Bell).” Mrs. Elizabeth Young owned the parcel when it was sewered.
