7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1879, this is a smaller yet
intensive Second Empire design, one that is very well preserved.
Physical Description: compare 1491 Main and particularly the dormer surrounds which look like mirror
frames, a strong likelihood of common designers. The brickwork in the 45-degree is of particular quality
with each turn finishing in a sharp edge and the continuing wall being recessed from that point so as to
create a vertical shadow line. This is a two-story elongated rectangular brick house plan with a
complex true mansard roof and distinctive narrow dormers, single (paired on the south wing) with
elaborate surrounds and singular lintels or caps. Raised stone foundation with water table, façade
consists of a right hand entry and a left hand full height three sided bay. A similar though broader bay
is on the south side rear. A long side porch infills the front portion of the south side. A square-cut entry
porch covers the main entry. There is a stone balustrade in front of it. The bracketed cornice wraps
around the bays. there is a single-story rear wing with side porch, mansard roof with two southside
dormers, one being a through cornice form. Porches retain their original turned columns with square
capitals, and denticulated cornices. Only the entry porch has been glassed in. Stone lintels are of the
wrap-around form with pointed pediments and clearly defines attached spring stones. There is an
excellent south side chimney that passes through the upper mansard cornice line. The chimney has a
paneled base and corbelled cap.
Alterations: very well preserved. Windows replaced. Permits note re-roofing in 1991 (recoating),
conversion of single-family dwelling to multi-family 1960 ($8,000), replace steps 1985, repair outside
entrance steps 1987, replace stairs from first to second story 1992.
Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner lot, the house being set back to the north, fronting east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Charles W. Bittman residence. Bittman was a grocer.
Original Owner/Builder: Bittman built this house for $9,000 in 1879 (Herald, January 1, 1880). He
finished the house the following year for $4,000 (ibid., January 1, 1881). This needs to be confirmed
given that Bittman is also credited with a $2,000 residence in 1880 (ibid.,) and that he was boarding at
1474 Clay by 1881, although he was at this address the previous year. By 1893 he lived at 1450 Iowa.
Building History: the house is extant in its current lines as of 1884, is poorly depicted on the 1889 birds
eye view, and apparently on the 1872 overview as well. If the latter is true, then the Bittman claim is
incorrect. Also the latter account fails to mention a French roof which is commonly done.
The Jackson Park Walking Tour dates the house to c.1875, credits the design to Fridolin Heer, and
identifies the first owner as John Olinger, president of Novelty Iron Works. The Bart Molo family was a
later long-term owner occupant and many call the house the Molo house. Molo organized the Linehan
and Molo Co. dealers in ice, coal, sand, gravel and finally gas and oil. His wife was the daughter of
