Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: Grannis says 1870? c.1895, two-story side gable brick duplex remodeled in Second Empire/Neo Classical style (single plane Mansard attic front, stylized stone lintels and belt courses, spandrel patterning). Physical Description: raised stone foundation, water table, twin three-sided bays set inside of outer front corners flank centered, paired double entries (with original doors, transoms) and rounded porch infills the gap between the bays. The brickwork on the bays is of particularly fine quality, the spandrels being corbelled out beneath each window. Three rows (21 units) of square terra cotta inserts with circular motifs form a band in each of the spandrel fronts. The stonework too is very unusual in that the lintels are combined with inset corbels or spring stones and the latter are incorporated into a stone belt course. The lintels have distinctive sill caps across each bay front. What might have been called Grecian decorative patterns, alternating circles and rectangles, ornament each lintel. There is a plain cornice, the mansard has fine metal end wall caps and end brackets. There are two double light shed roof dormers over the bays, and single light dormers between them. A two-story rear brick wing appears to be full-width. Alterations: remodeling added a floor, rebuilt roof as flat roof with mansard attic front, added two front bays (pre-existing square plan shown on 1891 Sanborn Map). Concrete front steps and metal railings. Permits note re-roofing in 1931, 1966 (repairs), conversion of three efficiency apartments to one or two bedroom units 1980, exterior alterations 1960. Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, fronts east. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Grannis “double Mulligan house” Building History: The Jackson Park Walking Tour dates the house to 1870. Mrs. Julia Mulligan and her son Henry (a grain commissioner) lived here for many years, prior to 1892. By 1899 directories place I. M. Platt and H. F. Mulligan here. Julia and Henry Mulligan were here through 1921. H. F. Mulligan owned the parcel when it was sewered. 9.
