7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1860 (rear), 1882, Second
Empire style (true mansard roof, dormers).
Physical Description: this two-story narrow brick rectangular plan is part of a cluster of examples of this
style and this one compares quite closely with 1611 Main to the south. There is a raised stone
foundation, water table, front three-sided bay (left side of façade), south similar bay (rear of core south
side), the entry is on the right front (original double doors, transom). The frieze is singular, apparently
of pressed metal with a rounded shingle pattern superimposed above a band of circular projections.
Remarkable is the absence of brackets. The cornice traces the bay tops and perimeter. The mansard
has twin cornices, decorative metal edgings on vertical corners, patterned slate, and vertical single light
gable roof dormers. These have projecting surrounds like 1491 and 1611 Main. There is a corbelled
brick chimney that passes through the upper cornice line. A two-story rear wing is offset to the north
and has a gable front roof and a full-length shed roof side porch on the south side. The porch has a flat
roof and dates to c.1910, being a Craftsman style with prick piers. The stone foundation was extended
when it was built and the stone is of a rougher texture than is the foundation on the core house.
Basement windows appear only beneath the bay fronts and the one on the core house has a rounded
stone lintel that has a projecting water table cap. The same treatment was accorded a broad under
porch front window.
Alterations: porch as noted, some window replacement on the rear wing. Permits note re-roofing
in1935. Grannis dates porch and bay to 1913.
Landscaping/Setting: level site, low concrete retaining wall, fronts east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Nicholas Thedinga House, he was the son of the first German-born mayor of
Dubuque.
Original Owner/Builder: Nicholas Thedinga, $5,000 (Herald, December 31, 1882).
Building History: the house is poorly depicted on the 1889 birds eye view. By 1893 the entire Thedinga
th
family resided at 25 5 Street. The front porch dates to 1912, the year Nicholas J. Loess bought the
house. Dr. William J. Loess had his medical practice here but it always remained a single-family
residence. Gail Naughton bought the house in 1978 from Leta Loess (1998 Old House Enthusiasts
House Tour).
The Jackson Park Walking Tour dates the original rear core to c.1860, and the front to 1880, the bay
window and porch to 1913. Prominent occupants included Nicholas Thedinga, William Bonson, and
Celina and Gustave Levi. Directories place O. G. Levi here in 1899, Nicholas J. Loess in 1918 and
Mary Loes in 1921.
