7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1879?, is pre-1889, likely a
Queen Anne/Shingle style makeover of a pre-existing two-story brick side gable duplex with twin front
bays. The latter style(s) embodied in the taller replacement roof, infilled upper gable ends, rounded
dormer front window openings, corbelled chimney caps. A period photo shows vertical siding on the
gable end bases, and shingle in the gable end apexes. Decorative cresting traced each roof ridge line.
Physical Description: broad rectangular brick duplex plan with flanking three-sided bays and centered
paired entrances, the latter covered by a short canopy that linked the two bays. Raised stone
foundation and water table, ornate brick core with soldier brick voussoir window arches, these being
outlined in raised brick lines, and these lines connecting with angled soldier brick belt courses at the
spring stone levels on each floor. Double brick wide projecting beltcourses trace the sill level on each
floor. Stone sills are unusually elaborate with raised ends and chamfered outer edges. The 45-degree
brick angles are well executed with pointed corner edges being paired with recessed turned wall
planes, creating vertical shadow lines. Large paired brackets cap each bay corner and support the twin
front gable roof dormers. The rounded window sets retain multi-paned upper sash so the openings
were always glassed in. There is a two-story centered rear brick wing. There is a mansard-like full-
length shed roof dormer on the north front of this rear wing and there is a centered side entrance with
square cut hip roof porch. There are four end wall chimneys.
Alterations: The Neo Classical porch, c.1910, has a flat roof, the bays, upper deck with metal railing,
brick piers and a wooden balustrade. It is presumed that all above the cornice level is a later
replacement and all wall surfaces have been resided, obscuring any detailing. This is either a
completely new building or a very substantial remodeling. Permits note re-roofing in 1964, 1990,
conversion to multiple family dwelling 1941 ($25), roof repair 1964, re-side 1978.
Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner parcel, building fronts east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; F. M. Robinson residence, Park Manor Apartments
Original Owner/Builder: Robinson built “a handsome brick dwelling…elegantly finished…modern
improve-ments..on Main near Jackson Park” (Herald, January 3, 1879), the Times reported it on this
corner and gave the cost as $25,000 (Times, December 11, 1878).
This does not look like an 1879 design however, being more properly late 1880s, and it is depicted on
the 1889 birds eye view and the 1891 Sanborn Map.
Building History: Anne Kruse lived here 1886-87. C.1880-85 photo confirms original appearance of this
property as having no bays, twin gable end attic lights, low roof profile. Joseph Herod owned the parcel
when it was sewered.
