J. Cushing House Dubuque Name of Property County 1752 Main Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: c.1894, late Queen Anne (large corner tower and turret roof, bays and gables, mixed cladding materials, Neo Classical (squarish core and hip roof, porch detailing). Physical Description: two-story L-plan frame residence, raised stone foundation, prominent hillside placement results in a double design front effect, broad gable roof west wing, nearly freestanding round corner oriole/tower with tall turret roof and finial, wrap around porch below same and along south side, south-facing gable roof wing with first floor bay (cut corners, paired brackets set atop each cutaway), east facing gable wing with double-decker porch, north wing with gable roof. All gable ends shingled with returned eaves, infilled apexes, triple window bands. There is a shallow three-sided cantilevered oriole on the west front. Shingled bands with bell cast base encircles the west front and tower base and the fronts of the other wings. The porch has a denticulated cornice and round Doric columns set on battered stone piers. Alterations: resided with asbestos siding, the porch is likely a c.1910 change given the use of stone piers and classical elements. Permits note re-roofing in 1984, porch re-roof 1962, doorway alterations 1985. Landscaping/Setting: hillside setting, carved out niche, ground falls away to south and rises abruptly to the north, concrete stairs/walk approach from the west, fronts west. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Building History: The Jackson Park Walking Tour links this house with the I. J. Cushing, son of ice and vinegar magnate James Cushing, who built this house. A catwalk linked this house with the father’s th house, due south, at 175 West 17 Street. Is post-1889. No sewer data found. 1899 I. J. Cushing listed at this address 9.
