8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; German Theological Seminary (c.1884-1909), Lady of Lourdes Nursing Home,
individually listed NRHP, built as first female seminary west of the Mississippi River.
Building History: The Jackson Park Walking Tour notes that Catherine Beecher, sister of Harriet
Beecher Stowe, provided $20,000 in matching funds to establish what was the first female seminary
west of Chicago. Locals borrowed $15,000 and the school was built in 1854, and lasted just four years
before it closed due to the lack of students. In 1858 the city bought the building for $12,000 and used it
as a high school but that use soon ended due to the financial panic of 1857-58. An Episcopalian
Seminary used the building until 1871 , when it was sold for $10,000 to the German Theological
Seminary. The building was condemned in 1907 and the school relocated to West Dubuque and was
re-titled the University of Dubuque. A Catholic high school for girls (Immaculate Conception Academy)
followed and in the 1950s and 60s the building served as a convalescent home. (Our Lady of Lourdes)
The Girl's Club of Dubuque was the tenant as of the 1980s.
