7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. StyleNear: 1886, Queen Anne style two-
story cross plan with brick first floor, frame second, half timber and stucco gable fronts. Neo Classical
era front porch present 1909).
Designer/Builder:
Physical Description: Pedimented gable front, front bay (left side) and external brick chimney (through
the cornices above), broad side gable roof wings, single-story three-sided frame bay on west wing and
a second chimney passes through the gable on that front. Upper window sash have perimeter square
cut light borders. The ground level brick window arches are very unusual, being soldier brick voussoir
arches that begin level at each spring stone point and wrap around the window top. There is a second
full-height bay at the back of the house core on the west side wall. There is a raised stone foundation
and the basement windows have stone voussiors. The porch has a rusticated stone foundation and
piers, open wooden balustrades, triple fluted square pillars and a plain flat cornice.
Alterations: the upper story might have been resided. The gable end treatments might not be original.
Porch added as noted. It is possible that this was first a brick cottage and was expanded. The original
corner porch appears to survive to the right of the new one. Permits note re-roofing in 1979, 1986, re-
side 1937, 1977 (change windows, also side rear dormer), repair overhang 1988, frame garage 21x31
1991.
Landscaping/Setting: hillside parcel with ground rising to the north, house fronts south.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; F. B. Daniels (?)
Original Owner/Builder: F. B. Daniels built a two-story brick dwelling at 279 17th Street for $3,500
(Herald, January 1, 1887). This clearly isn't that building.
Building History: permit for re-siding, $150, 1937 (single-family). Same for 1977, $6,000. Frame
detached garage to single-family dwelling, $6,451, 1991.
The Jackson Park Walking Tour places William Bonson, son of Judge Richard Bonson, at this address
(directories confirm for 1899), he was a law partner with his brother Robert. The Bonsons also built
boats and William was a bank director. Alfred Tredway, owner of Iowa Iron Works and a heavy
hardware business, lived here as of 1918, as did Fannie Tredway in 1921.
