8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; H. 1. Woodman residence
Original Owner/Builder: Woodman excavated and built the 24x40 foundation for his house ($4,000) in
1867 at the foot of Seminary Hill, corner of Main and Mineral streets, on the lot east of and next to that
of the photographer Samuel Root (209 17th St)(Herald, September 5, 1867). He finished it the next
year, it being described as a "handsome brick residence, two stories high, of irregular shape" costing
$5-6,000 or $8,000 (ibid., December 13, 1868; January 1, 1869). It was then located at the head of
Main Street on 17th Street. He made $1,800 in improvements in 1870 (Times, December 18,1870).
Another builder candidate is David Oliver (239 17th, same as 175 West 17th now), who completed a
residence in 1881 for $2,500, using builders Oliver & Cragin (Herald, December 4, 1881)
Building History: demo permit for 175 West 17th, no date.
The Jackson Park Walking Tour credits James Cushing with building this house. Cushing monopolized
the ice business in the city and later acquired what became the Northwest Vinegar Works, the largest
such plant in Iowa. His son lived at 1752 Main, on the hillside immediately north, and the two houses
were linked by a catwalk. William Lawther, president of Lawther Confectionary, a major candy
manufacturer on Main Street, later lived here and directories confirm this for the years 1899-1921. No
sewer data found.
1873 directory lists Harvey F Woodman, naturalist at 17th ns 2 s Main
