8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: Solon Langworthy (?-1886) owned the property, transferred it to his wife Julia and it
was divided, this lot passing to Belle Stillman for $750. She conveyed it to her husband for $1,500,
took out a mortgage for $1,400 nine months later. This house was built in 1901. This house was then
used to finance the construction of other area houses, a new one being built every few years. The
family was here as late as 1910, at which time Mrs. Stillman died. Interim owners were Thomas
Hughes (not an occupant), Edmund Belman, a realtor (1918-21), Dr. John Murray (1922), and Ken
Gordon (1945). Gordon was a television company owner and erected a huge transmission tower on
this property. The tower was blown down by a tornado in 1969. Mr. and Mrs. James Ryan moved in as
owners in 1959 and began its restoration (typed manuscript, "Home of Mr. and Mrs. James Ryan," n.d.,
Historic Houses File, File F1, Center For Dubuque History).
F. L. Poole owned the property when it was sewered and the sewer tap dates to c.1908.
