7. Narrative Description:
Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Italianate style cubic two-story hip roof brick plan with center hall entry, two side chimneys, stone
foundation and water table with straight stone lintels, small hip roof porch, two types of wrap-around
stone lintels on two front levels, straight on sidewalls, fluted porch columns, broad stairs, heavy dentils
and paired brackets, south side chimney, narrow windows, four kinds of stone lintels mixed by floor and
front/side wall.
Physical Description:
34x36 core, 10x5 porch, raised foundation, single-story brick kitchen wing. Stone lintels on basement
windows set below water table level.
Alterations:
Poor re-pointing job on lower walls makes it look line an enlarged house, some rear and rear wing
windows replaced.

1993 – erect 24 x 30 detached frame garage on foundation & retaining wall two family residence-owner:

Received 1992, 2001 County Historical Society Preservation Awards
Sewer Record: 1907 sewer record shows owner: Maria Kiene (lot 9 of King’s add)
Peter Kiehne Sr. builds two-story brick residence, $3,000 (Herald, December 4, 1881) (location not
determined).
Notes from property abstract:
Lot 9 is platted out by Sept. 1853 and Peter Kiehne buys it for $600 at that time from Jane and Wm.
Johnson. Kiehne dies April 14, 1898. Estate info. states that Barthol Kiehne (1848-74), Anna Kiehne
(1857-60) were children, his first wife was Mary (1818-1855) and his second wife Maria Adelherd
(1835-1906). Harry Kiehne, the 1898 administrator was likely a son as was Peter J. Kiehne, 1846-

1912. Emil Kiehne who next owned the property died 1923 and his wife was Mabel Kiehne Heeb. A. F.
Heeb owned the parcel as of 1933. Dorothea Heeb acquired it in 1935 (died 1948). A mortgage for
$5,500 is dated July 18, 1939. The lot was subdivided leaving only a 50’ parcel for the original house in
the southeast corner April 12, 1948. The large shed at the rear of the property was a contractor’s shed
associated with this property. The Herbst family purchased the house in 1944 from Kruse.
