7. Narrative Description:
Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Italianate style, brick, gable front with east three-sided full height bay, deeper west wing, T-plan.
Physical Description:
Near-rectangular plan with side bays, 9x24 gable front porch, very unusual triangular shaped stone
lintels with scored ornamentation, painted house number in transom, brown brick, rowlock arches on
side walls, tapered porch columns
Alterations:
Concrete porch base with paneled side walls.
Building Permits:
1988 – new soffit, flashings, moldings, (James Ott) $5,300

Landscaping Notes:
Deeper setback, on raised second terrace level, concrete steps, fronts northeast.

Historical Notes:
Lean Duncan owns two lots when sewered June 2, 1905.
Deeper setback implies that this is the earliest house to be built on this street and hints that its builder
was the probable developer, which is documented by the subdivision title.

Ethelburt O. Duncan, (on Summit 1874) 1877-1899, first listed on Seminary Hill, 1877, flour dealer
(102), 1878, as clerk 1880, Salesman at Blue Store 1883, traveling sales J. P. Farley 1886-94, same
John Baehler Co. 1884 (as 106), secretary Dubuque Fruit Products Co. Nora and Emma Duncan are
listed on Seminary as of 1888. E. O. Duncan is listed again as 106 in 1890, he was then a traveling
agent for Coates & Waller; also there were Miss Emma Dement (boarder), E. H. Powell, traveling agent
for J. P. Farley

inset porch, with deep setback on bluff front, as 60 Seminary.
1909 Sanborn shows an added rear west wing, and full-width front porch, as 60/96 Seminary.
