7. Narrative Description:
Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Vernacular two-story gable front brick, L-plan with long west wing offset right, unusual shed roof porch
inset to left of wing, open balcony above with walkout, curved stone lintels, 4/4 lights, half-size Tuscan
columns on porch. Side hall (left) plan. Unusual L-plan variant of gable front with some Italianate style
features (2/2 lights).
Physical Description:
32x48 L-plan core with wing to right front, porch in left front corner, stone sills and foundation, double
entry with transom on left side of front wing. A combination of curved and straight stone lintels,
basement window arches are set above the foundation wall.
Alterations:
West end windows enlarged, brick porch base, Classical Revival gable front porch with half-found
columns set atop brick piers, first floor corner porch enclosed.
Outbuildings:
Double frame bellcast hip roof garage, narrow clapboard, corner boards
Landscaping Notes:
Moderate terrace, drive to west, fronts south.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
The original owner/occupant has yet to be identified. It is strange that the historical house number
matches the current one-this needs to be double checked.
Historical Notes:
1873 directory lists Lewis T. Farwell two houses west of Madison.
Traveling Agent Charles Arms lives near here, 1873 2 east of Madison.
