Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Italianate style Villa style, two-story brick hip roof) with pronounced cornice, four end chimneys, elongated lower windows, symmetrical fenestration, square cupola, gable roof entry porch Physical Description: 38x30 core with centered 20x16 rear wing, stone foundation but no water table, Greek Revival window surrounds, east and two west side chimneys project above parapet walls Alterations: Altered entry, gable front entry portico new, vertical aluminum siding on soffit and cupola Building Permit Cards: 1987- re-roof, cover dormer 2F brick dwelling-owner: Jim Scranton-contractor: Inter-State Contr-$2900 1988-rebuild porch SF brick dwelling –owner and contractor same-$500 erect 8 x 8 deck on rear-$337 1992- erect 4 x 5 landing & steps – owner: Mrs. M. Outbuildings: Deck Landscaping Notes: Iron fence, yard to west, very substantial and old on cut stone base, fronts north 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Evaluation: House surveyed by Kriviskey in 1979, rated “2” as an excellent example of a relatively common Dubuque style.” Historical Notes: Likely built by Mayor Sol Turck, 1868, Herald (December 13, 1868 and Times, January 1, 1869, report new brick country house in Villa or Italian style, in “picturesque situation”, irregular square plan, numerous outbuildings, gas fixtures, furnaces, bathing rooms, reported in early 1869 as “finished rd residence on 3 –palatial-one of the very finest in the city,” cost put at $16,000, also two-story brick addition, $1,100 (Herald, Dec. 16, 1869). 1873 directory might place Michael Gilleas, Engineer ICRR here (third west from Summit). Two boarders, Henry B. Glover (Glover & Smock) and teamster George Tucker also likely here. Robbery at Richard Scott’s House, formerly Turck’s reported in Die Iowa, May 3, 1876. Used as a nursery school as of 1979.
