8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This early (1856) Italianate style house has defied efforts to identify its first owner/occupant using city
directories.
Historical Notes:
It is probable that this house was built by the Cannon brothers in 1857-58, passed to H. B. Glover, who
added a Mansard roof in 1870, appears as same in the 1889 panoramic view, and was occupied by C.
W. Wullweber beginning in 1890 (family remained through 1921). H. and C. Cannon built a two-story
brick house on Fenelon, east of Summit, for $2500 in 1857-early 1858. The brothers were grocers.
George Mitchell, President IPRR, lives third house east of Summit, 1873.
George W. Mitchell, south side of Fenelon, buys place formerly owned by Hugh Smith (H. H. Smith
then lived four doors east of Summit) (Herald, September 5, 1867) [likely not this house].
