7. Narrative Description:
Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Classical Revival style two-story frame hip roof plan with offset front gable roof dormer with returned
eaves, latter infilled at its apex with returned eaves, diamond pattern attic light set. Very unusual corner
short window set above entry, presumably for bathroom location.
Physical Description:
Core plan 34x26 with shallow offset side wings, attached flat roof garage (18x10) to right, hip roof north
dormer, stone foundation.
Alterations:
Steel (very negative impact), faux shutters
Building Permit Cards:
1941-garage
1989-remove and replace section of siding on dormer
1993-steel siding
Outbuildings:
None (attached garage, shed roof)
Landscaping Notes:
Level, ground drops to the south, drive and garage wing to south, fronts west.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Historical Notes:
Unnamed parties build two story brick dwellings on Summit, $3,000 (Herald, January 1, 1887).
Charles H. Mattox, south of Alpheus Baker on Summit, 1868-74, he is brick layer (east side Summit five
th
doors south of 5), Edmund Mattox also there as a nurseryman. Edward Mattox (92 Summit) listed
1883.
Fred Ris builds “dwellings” on Summit Street, 1905, $3,000, J. F. Ris & Bro. Hardware (Telegraph-
Herald, December 31, 1905).
