Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
ltalianate two-story hip roof plan, cut stone foundation, wooden water table, elaborate window
surrounds, brackets, through-cornice dormers, rounded in front, double-decker west by larger on lower
level, oriole on second floor on rear west wall, rear corner side porches,
Physical Description:
Core, 36x38, 18x24 rear wing, unusual paired window sets with centered semi-circular pediments,
brackets are combined with ornate purlin or modillion extensions, broad eaves, square-cut broad
centered pediments (gable fronts with returned eaves, round attic lights) on front and sides, east wing
has very unusual ground level projection set beneath a bracketed cornice, stone foundation,

Converted into apartments by 1930, two-story wrap-around porch lost in 1950s,

Historical Notes:
Built for an Englishman, Jacob Rich who came to city from Chicago (Annual Dubuque Fest House Tour,
May 20-21, 1995), Jacob Rich takes possession of new home on bluff "where the air is pure and the
view extended, taking in a view of three states, Jacob was never better fixed in his life"," (Herald, May
1,1880),
