Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Queen Anne/shingle style, two-story frame plan with hip roof core, asymmetrical plan, broad east
Mansard-like wing with rounded corners, two red stone chimneys, gable roof east dormer, shingle-style
gablet with infilled apex, saw tooth shingle, corner boards, wrap-around porch, huge rear (south) lunette
window
Physical Description:
Squarish plan with rear wing (11 x13 at rear right), two right side bays, wrap-around porch on left and
front, 53x37 core, ashlar stone foundation. Moorish style interior.
Building Permit Cards:
1941-add bathroom
1983-remodel interior
2000-repair fire damage, $18,000 (Darryl Mozena).
Outbuildings:
Stucco Tudor Revival style hip roof garage with twin doors, 26x20, catslide shed to west attached,
pergola
Landscaping Notes:
Large corner lot, concrete retaining wall, east and front gates, drive to west and open yard same,
garage to west side, metal fence

Key building
House surveyed by Kriviskey in 1979, rated "2" as an exceptionally good example of its style and the
use of quality materials in the late 19th C."
Designer/Contractor:
F. E. Hyde, Architect. J. Proctor did foundation work, N. P. Nick, carpentry, Wood & Ellis, brickwork.
Historical Notes:
Bissell was the son of F. E. Bissell (?-1867) and by age 35 was the Pres. And Board Chairman of H. B.
Glover Co. Family owns house until 1977, last occupied by daughter Bess who died at age 98 in 1974,
she was an advocate for Womens' suffrage, worked for Red Cross and served in the Italian Army
during WWI, founder of Dial literary magazine. Writer Richard (and Marion) Bissell own house (he died
1979) Mozena family buys and restores over 13 year period. House built for cost of $12,000.
L. C. Bissell owns when sewered 1891.

See S. C. or S. G. Bissell who builds $10,000 new house on West 3rd, listed at 386 W. 3rd 1894,
Sec/Treas. H. B. Glover (Herald, December 29, 1889; 1890-1990: 900 West 3rd Street: A Century of
Victorian Living, Daryl and Terry Mozena).

Historical Image Notes:
The 1909 Sanborn map shows the house with a staggered fac;:ade and right-hand wing, a
corresponding rear wing, and an east wing. The back of the plan is infilled with single-story additions.
A wrap-around porch has an eastern wing and covers the fac;:ade. There is a rounded west side entry
porch (400 West 3rd).
The 1909/36 Sanborn map shows the same, and adds a small tile garage to the west of the house.
