Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. StyleNear: 1910-11, Neo Classical style embodied in its Palladian profile, temple front with entablature, broken front pediment, centered double entry with transom (diamond lights) and applied pediment, shoulders on gable ends, broad frieze with windows that interrupt or partly interrupt the frieze band, arched triple window sets with multiple small light windows. Physical Description: this plan lacks the expected scaled cruciform layout and is in fact nearly a square plan overall. A 2.5-story gable front core dominates the whole and houses the sanctuary. Gable roof side wings project on each side. A two-story porch with Tuscan style columns on a raised porch dominates the fayade. An element of particular interest is the window design that features a full-length window bay with brick surround and an infilled faux lower window. The upper window interrupts the base of the frieze. On the side wings, twin triple window sets, the uppermost with rounded top, are recessed within a common window bay and brick pilasters link each set, continuing across the spandrel fronts. Raised stone foundation, brick exterior. Alterations: very well preserved. Permits note re-roofing in 1989 ($7,000), alteration to masonry and frame assembly building 1991 ($246,000), cut door in basement wall 1998). Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner lot, ground level drops slightly to the east, fronts south. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; First Church of Christ Scientist Original Owner/Builder: First Church of Christ Scientist, $40,000 (Telegraph-Herald, January 1, 1911). Building History: Dubuque students established the congregation in 1892 and meetings were held in member homes. In 1903 a two-story house on this site was acquired and remodeled. This building is depicted as a single-story squarish plan as of 1909/36 that building remained in place. If accurate this building post-dates 1936 although it is dated to 1911. First services were held December 14, 1911. The final service took place November 27, 1988 at which time the membership was just 15. The Herald, April 13, 1900, announced early intentions on the part of the congregation to build a church. P. W. Crawford owned the parcel when it was sewered, the tap date being November 23, 1903.
