7. Narrative Description:
The Assessor dates this building to 1875. This is a two-story brick Queen Anne style rowhouse
design. The firewall extension on the east side was apparently anticipatory and no adjoining building
was built. Perhaps the owner/builder saw this as phase one of a double house plan? The design is of
some interest because of the use of the cross gable and the semi-circular attic light. The windows are
unevenly distributed across the fayade although they are vertically alligned. The entryway features
sidelights and a transom, the canopy being of later date (c.World War I). The window arches
incorporate keystones and springstones. The bay is a major alteration, one that obliterated two lower
level windows, the arches of which are partly visible in the photograph.
The plan measures 21.6 feet across the front and 56 feet in depth, a total of 1,083 square feet
on each level. There is a rear (west side) recessed double porch and two frame additions centered on
the east side of the plan. The house is built with structural brick walls, with a limestone foundation.
There is a full basement. A double garage (20x20) dates to 1940.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This interesting Queen Anne rowhouse design appears to be half of an anticipated double
rowhouse design. The bay window alteration renders the building ineligible for a determination of
architectural significance.
This building appears, in its present configuration, on the 1909 Sanborn Map (417 Eagle Point
Road). The front bay, entry canopy and the two-story carriage house to the rear were all present.
There was also a recessed porch at the northwest corner of the plan.
The first identified occupant was J. J. Ott, Ott, Meuser & Company lumber dealers, in 1899.
William Meuser, president of Metz Manufacturing Company, lived here as of 1921, but resided at 417
Eagle Point Road as of 1918.
