Masterpiece on the Mississippi
Whereas, taiko drumming ensemble Ondekoza of Japan visits Dubuque February 12t" through
February 17, 2018 for the group's only lowa engagement as part of an Arts Midwest
World Fest nine-state tour; and
Whereas Arts Midwest connects small and mid-sized Midwestern communities to world cultures
through week-long residencies with global performers; and
Whereas, Ondekoza marks the second of four global music ensemble residencies over a two-year
period with groups representing Israel, Japan, China, and Norway; and
Whereas, the Dubuque Arts Council and University of Dubuque Heritage Center team up in this
collaborative venture to make this engagement possible along with support from the
National Endowment for the Arts, the lowa Arts Council, The Hearst Foundations, 3M,
the Japan Foundation through the Performing Arts JAPAN program, the Kaufman
Family Fund for Israeli Cultural Exchange, the Nordic Culture Fund, Music Norway, the
Minnesota State Arts Board, and the BNSF Railway Foundation; and
Whereas, Ondekoza will perform educational outreach throughout the week for two thousand
students in grades Pre-K to 8 throughout eight area schools including Sageville, Holy
Ghost, Resurrection, St. Columbkille, Jefferson Middle School, all of Dubuque, as well
as outlying schools, Seton Catholic, Farley Elementary, and Galena Primary; and
Whereas, Ondekoza will offer a pre-concert talk from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Babka Theatre prior to
their mainstage concert presentation in Heritage Center's John and Alice Butler Hall on
Saturday evening, the 17t" of February; and
Whereas, a harmonious relationship between the state of lowa and the United States of America
and Japan is of critical importance to the citizenry of both countries.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF
OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM
THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 12-17, 2018 AS
"JAPANESE MUSIC AND CULTURE WEEK"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
