7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1876, 1886
(Assessor), two-story brick side gable Italianate style residence (paired brackets, narrow windows,
original double doorway with rounded lights).
Physical Description: broad plan, raised stone foundation, symmetrical fenestration, centered double
recessed entry, special feature are the oversized applied (cast iron?, same on 464 Loras immediately
west) pedimented lintels and thin sills (wood?). Chimneys on ends of roof ridge, eaves continue
beyond end walls, earliest rear wings are behind east half of plan. Square plan (32x34) with offset rear
wing (12x13).
Alterations: small front porch present by 1909, brick painted. Permits note re-roofings in 1946, 1976
(south half), 1994.
Landscaping/Setting: excavated level site on hillside, stone retaining wall west of parcel.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; W. H. Peabody is likely the builder.
Original Owner/Builder: Moses H. Martin, of the Martin-Strelau Company, remodeled this residence in
1897 (Herald, January 5, 1898). See also 636 Loras which he owned given Directory doesn’t list him
here then, here 1918..
Building History: 460 and 464 Loras have nearly identical plans and matching lintels and rear wings.
W. H. Peabody owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889. He built two brick houses on this street
in 1876 (Herald, June 15, 1876). Mrs. E. D. Carter owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889.

First directory listing is 1884, Mrs. Elizabeth D. Carter, widow of William, at 52 West 14. She remains
through 1890.
