Narrative Description: Vernacular two-story front gable L-plan (side hall plan, single right side entry), stone construction gable front north half with unusual brick infill around windows, classical entry surround with new transom, right side hall, brick basement window arches Physical Description: 36x25 core, 18x24 side wing Alterations: Enlarged by addition of wing. Front of brick wing re-worked as lower floor windows have flat soldier brick arches, so windows likely both raised and shortened. 126 tons of stucco removed 1976, Rob and Judy McCoy add three entryways, gut brick house, add second floor loft with two-story fireplace, 24’-high bookcase with ladder (Annual Dubuque Fest House Tour, May 20-21, 1995). Building Permit Card: 1978 – remodel/erect rear porch on SF brick dwelling-owner: Robert McCoy-$23,000 Outbuildings: None Landscaping Notes: Extensive stone retaining wall and terrace system to east rear, house set close to sidewalk Loss of Stucco detracts from integrity, possibly non-contributing? Stucco could have been added in late 1890s when this was a common practice to dress up stone buildings? 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Evaluation: House associated with local developer of neighborhood. Individually eligible for NRHP. House surveyed by Kriviskey in 1979, rated “2” as an important early and excellent example of its style. John King builds 1857, sells 1859 to Herman and Anna Bruening, their son Herman Sagehorn, adds brick house with sep. entry c.1879, both bldgs. Stuccoed. th 1873 directory places Philip Louis Des Jardin on the northeast corner, 25 and Broadway, and Hy th Sagehorn (bookkeeper, German Savings Bank) and Herman Bruening 2 houses north of 25). A. Not mapped for Sanborn map series. 1891 Sanborn map shows two-story north portion with full-width rear porch advanced to curb, two-story centered south wing with two-story rear shallow wings, two-story carriage house in southeast corner, as 14 Broadway. The 1909 map shows the same, as 8-10 Broadway. The 1909/36 map shows no carriage house. 9.
