7. Narrative Description:
Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Italianate style two-story T plan, Stylistic features include lunette window attic light, front side hall entry
and surviving elongated narrow windows on façade and lower level all around. Bracketts likely lost but
unusual vertical siding with rounded lower butts and circular cutout coffers walls above window level
and under eaves lines.

Wing toward street, 33’ width by 32’ depth, stoop with metal railing in lieu of porch, shed roof rear
porch, 1.5-story rear wing.
Alterations:
An 1897 photo shows a full-width front porch, an in-wall brick chimney on the south side, broad eaves
and ornamental bargeboard tirm work, as well as a canopy-covered side entry on the east side of the
south bay. Transom covered, asbestos siding, no porch, window replacements.
Building Permits:
1966-re-sided
Outbuildings:
None
Landscaping Notes:
Driveway cut in curve but no drive
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Evaluation:
This is the only survivor of a number of earlier houses which lined this side of Broadway pre-1890 and
pre-1872. Several of these occupied recessed or bluff front positions (see 1872 view). While altered, it
is a good frame Italianate design example. It is also documented with a historical photo and could be
nicely restored.
Historical Notes:
Godfrey Blocklinger and his wife came separately to the city in 1844 and were married two years later.
Both were born in St. Gallen Canton in Switzerland. Godfrey was the city’s first street commissioner
and was lauded for the lasting quality of his improvements at the time of his death after two decades of
time. He was a leading promoter of the cultivation of fruit, shrubbery, and shade trees (“an active
member of the Farmers Club”?), and was active in the Old Settlers’’ Association. Eight of 16 children
survived him, four boys and four girls. His son Godfrey, born c.1848, was in the navy. He died March
13, 1876 (Herald, March 14, 1876).
