7. Narrative Description:
This is a later (1925) example of the two-story brick Colonial Revival central hall type of house.
It is prominently across from Jefferson Middle School (1922-23) and is part of a grouping of nicer
homes which border on the school property to the northeast and east of the main entrance.
The plan (26x28) contains 1,008 square feet of living space on the ground floor. The centered
front porch measures 8x17, and the attached garage (north side) 20x9. There is a rear porch, slightly
offset to the east (8x19). There is also a large (40x22) single story rear addition.
The foundation, according to the Assessor, is stone, although concrete is more likely given the
building date. There is a full basement. The house gained a 16x22 pool and concrete patio (500
square feet) both added in 1976.
Typical of Dubuque, this design incorporates Craftsman style features, the upper window sash
and the flared roof eaves. Fenestration is balanced but not symmetrical, with a full band of paired
windows across the lower front floor, and a single centered pair with flanking single windows above.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This style is not common to the city but there is nothing sufficiently distinctive about this
example to merit individual architectural significance. It would certainly contribute to a district if one
was present.
George Schwinn, secretary for F. M. Jaeger Hardware Company, lived here as of 1925. He
was at a different address two years previous. He is probably the original owner.
This area is not mapped until 1936 by which time this house was present. The same garage
was present. There was a rear porch and an outbuilding behind the house.
