WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
in our society violence against women and children continue to escalate; and
sexual violence affects every person in Dubuque, Iowa as a victim/survivor or
as a family member, significant other, neighbor or co-worker of a
victim/survivor; and
WHEREAS,
many citizens of Dubuque, Iowa are working to provide quality services and
assistance to sexual assault survivors; five staff members and sixteen
volunteers help staff 24-hour hotlines, provide counseling, respond to
emergency calls and offer support, comfort and advocacy during medical
exams and criminal justice proceedings; and
Dubuque, Iowa' sexual assault programs, other professionals and supporters
have joined together to support each other in their work and to provide the
City of Dubuque and its citizens with a central source of information on sexual
assault; and
WHEREAS,
it is critical to intensify public awareness of sexual violence, to educate people
about the need for citizen involvement in efforts to reduce sexual violence, to
increase support for agencies providing sexual assault services and to
increase awareness of the healing power of creative expression; and
WHEREAS,
the Riverview Center, Inc. Sexual A=sault Prevention and Intervention Services
requests public support and assistance as it continues to work toward a
society where all women, children and men can live in peace, free from
violence and exploitation.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE,
IOWA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2001 AS:
"SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH~
AND CALL AMONG MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY TO JOIN TOGETHER TO SUPPORT
SEXUAL ASSAULT EDUCATION AND PREVENTION.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto
set my hand and caused the Great Seal of
the City of Dubuque, IA to be affixed this
