Proclamation - HolocaustWHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and
annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators
between 1933 and 1945. Jews were the ' victims - six million
primary
were murdered; Gypsies, the handicapped and Poles were also

targeted for destruction or decimation racial, ethn~,~ or national
reasons. Millions more, includ~n..~ homosexuals, Jehovah s Witnesses,
Soviet prisoners of ware and political dissidents, also suffered grievous
oppression and death under Nazi tyranny; and
sixty years ago the darkest, most murderous moment of history was
unleashed, and the voices of freedom and justice were still. Those
who survived the killing camps tell us that as many of those people
walked to their death, their lastwords were"Remember us. Remember
us;" and
WHEREAS, we the people of the City of Dubuque should always remember the
terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred,
persecution, and tyranny and to that end actively rededicate our
ourselves to the principles of individual freedom in a just society; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to an Act of Congress (Public Law 96-388, October 7, 1980)
the United States Holocaust Memorial Council designates the Days of
Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust to be Sunday, April 15th
through Sunday, April 22nd, 2001, including the International Day of
Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah, April 19th.
NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MA YOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE,
IOWA DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF APRIL 15 THROUGH APRIL 22, 2001
AS:
"DA YS OF REMEMBRANCE OF THE VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST'
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
