Proclamation - Prayer Day rOrtamation
WHEREAS, throughout the history of our country, p_ra~yer has been recognized by_
our leaders in times of war-- and peace as vital to the maintenance of
a strong national character, and necessary to procure the ble.s, sings of
a just and benevolent God upon our government and people, and
WHEREAS, prayer was regularly practiced and often referred to publicly by the men
who wrote and sighed our Constitution, and a Day of Prayer is one of
our oldest national observances; and
WHEREAS, it is eminently fitting and proper that we in Dubuque observe a day
when all in our communities may acknowledge our many blessings and
express gratitude to God for them while recognizing the need for
strengthening of religious and moral values in our land; and
WHEREAS, the United State of America is beset with a tidal wave of violence, both
~ juvenile and adult, teenage pregnancies, dysfunctional fami~ll~e.s, and a
host of problems which are tearing apart our societal fabricS, and
WHEREAS, the power of pray_er, and the power of God through prayer, have been at
the core of the shared American experience throughout history..
NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MA YOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE,
IOWA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THAT THURSDA Y, MAY3, 2001 BE PROCLAIMED AS
A
"DA Y OF PRAYER"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND URGE EVERYONE TO DEVELOP
PRACTICE OF PRAYER IN THEIR LIFE, ESPEClALLY ON THURSDA Y, MA Y 3, 2001.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have
