7. Narrative Description:
This two story brick commercial building is 50' square with a flat roof sloping gently to the rear.
It is a double storefront design, with both storefronts retaining a high degree of integrity with recessed
central entrances, metal columns, and large display windows (now covered) with the original wood
panels below. A transomed door leading to the second floor is located in the center of the fayade.
Second floor windows, and those on side elevations, are double hung sash with cast sills. The five
windows on the fayade have decorative cast hoodmolds. A corbelled brick cornice is located just below
what would have originally been a pressed metal cornice, non-extant.
This building is typical of commercial design from c.1885-95. It does not appear to be
individually eligible, but if a historic district was identified in this area it could be a strong contributing
structure.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
The 1885 date of construction provided by the assessor's office appears appropriate for this
building. The first Sanborn map to show this particular area is 1909, and this building appears in its
present form. At that time the right half (west) is identified as a "saloon," while the east half is simply
labeled "Store." It appears to have been used for commercial purposes, with either apartments or
offices above, until the mid-1990s at which time it was changed to a residential classification.
This building is a good example of the commercial buildings scattered throughout the Eagle
Point survey area. Although there is a cluster of commercial structures near Rhomberg and Kniest,
others are found on street corners every two or three blocks. Often these served as neighborhood
groceries or meat markets, and a number were also used as saloons... . .neighborhood bars.
