7. Narrative Description:
This single story concrete block house is rectangular in shape and features a hip roof. The
subsumed front porch is supported by slender concrete block posts. The house rests on a concrete
foundation and the exterior walls are of rusticated concrete block. The broad front porch and hipped
front dormer are characteristics of the popular Bungalow style. A number of houses in the survey area
were built in this style and material, specifically several located on Marquette Place.
Rusticated concrete block was popular as it had been introduced as "the building material of the
future... ..looks like stone, is fireproof like stone, is cheaper than stone." Several builders inDubuque
including Chris Voelker used this material.
This house is not individually significant, but is a good example of its period and style.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
This house was built in this neighborhood around 1925 as an in-fill structure. Most of the
properties around it dated much earlier and many were of red brick construction. No historical
information has been located on this house.
