INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memorandum is to present the 2017 Tree City USA award to the
Mayor and City Council.
DISCUSSION
At the request of the Dubuque Trees Forever group, the City of Dubuque Leisure
Services Department applied for the Tree City USA award in December of 2017. In
February of 2018, staff was notified that the application was received and approved.
The City of Dubuque was honored with the 2017 Tree City USA award at the 28th
Annual Community Forestry Awards Luncheon in Des Moines. The award was
presented by the Arbor Day Foundation and the lowa Department of Natural Resources
April 4th at the Sheraton in West Des Moines.
Dubuque was one of 79 lowa communities to qualify for Tree City USA status. To
receive the award, a city must, at a minimum, have either a city forester or an active city
tree board; have a tree ordinance; spend at least $2 per capita annually for its
community forestry program; and have a tree planting and maintenance plan.
ACTION
We will be at the City Council to present the 2017 Tree City USA award to the Mayor
and City Council.
Prepared by Steve Fehsal, Park Division Manager

FOR IMMEDIATE REI,EASE:
Arbor Day Foundation Names Dubuque Tree City USA
Dubuque,IA,was named a 2017 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its
commitment to effective urban forest management.
Dubuque achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board
or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least$2 per capita and
an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
"Tree City USA comnunities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand,"
said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Additionally, recognition brings
residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it's through volunteer
engagement or public education." 1
!
Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They I
help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home
cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits. ;
